Blackle Web Search Though Blackle is NOT a part of the BBS Crawler Search Network (though we've asked them to be. no reply as of yet) we link to them on a lot of our Search Portals just because it's cool and unique in it's simplicity, while making a very important point. Blackle was created by Heap Media to remind us all of the need to take small steps in our everyday lives to save energy. Blackle searches are powered by Google Custom Search. Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, 2002. In January 2007 a blog post titled Black Google Would Save 750 Megawatt-hours a Year proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages. They believe that there is value in the concept because even if the energy savings are small, they all add up. Secondly we feel that seeing Blackle every time we load our web browser reminds us that we need to keep taking small steps to save energy. BBS Crawler agrees with them. Seeing as they are not in the BBS Crawler Search Network, clicking into them will open it up in a new tab or window (depending on your browser settings) as opposed to remaining in the current tab or window.

BBS Crawler Exchange In Alpha Testing! This service is not yet available to everyone yet but is still note worthy of being announced. All aspects of this exchange wll randomly display banners as to make things fair. No ratios. No quotas. We will also not limit the amount of banners you can have, just so long as they are for different aspects of your website and not two banners for the exact same thing. Echomail Message Groups Ironically, this is a bit more advanced of a feature than Google Groups or Yahoo Groups. With this, you can search a large number of different types of syndicated communities. Email Listservs (such as is the purpose of Yahoo Groups), Usenet Newsgroups (such as is the purpose of Google Groups), Echomail Networks (sort of like Usenet, but have been around longer, are privately owned and don't contain spammers) as well as other types of syndicated forums, blogs and feeds. So when you want to speak your mind globally (instead of limiting your words to merely a single site or server) then this is the service you're going to require.
